Video Game Database software

For myself, I have always used a cleverly-written HTML file, that doubles as a CSV file with dummy columns. So, you open it in a browser, you get a nice web page, but if you open it (properly) in a spreadsheet program, you get a spreadsheet. I've been trying to get away from that for a while, but every time I go to write something else (a program to import/export the current list to a real database), I get distracted by real work. So, I've been inefficiently maintaining this almost-2-megabyte monstrosity for years :-)

I'm surprised that there isn't better, and more, software for this sort of thing, given that all of us who are anal-retentive enough to be collecting sealed games in the first place a pretty fastidious about our endless cataloging and ordering.

Anyway, back on topic, I see a lot of online cataloging sites these days letting people build personal lists as subsets of their "complete" catalogs. I think most of us will end up using this sort of thing eventually. Primarily, these seem to actually be game trading sites or collector's forums, but not always.

I tried it many years ago and found it to be frustratingly tedious. I also believe it was designed to be used with their own infrared laser barcode scanners which would make cataloging much easier. Personally, I find it's much easier to create your own excel database and format it how you require.

I've also tried a few others on the list that The Imp posted above, only to find that a lot of them are Americanized - Ie, aimed specifically at the US collector's, and as a result often use NTSC cover artwork for the pictures, and also rarely include many of the European LE's and CE's

The only problem with any kind of database though is ensuring you keep it up to date everytime you add (Or take away) an item from your ccollecction, which unfortunately I am not too good at - However, I do try and keep a lot of my threads on here up-to-date best I can, although my IGN list has slipped somewhat to the point where I have to go through it thoroughly and see what I have yet to add

i just tried collectorz.com but it's a hassle to actually put games and pictures in their and it doesn't look portable since you can only point to pictures on your hard drive.

It's a hassle to put anything anywhere. So it's not a minus.
Adding games in online shit as ign is even more hassle.
You can export it to anything and make it more portable.

but do the pics come with it when you export?
and what format does it export to? Some file which you need collectorz.com to open?

yes, they all rename automatically and sit in export folder.
YEars ago i've exported it all this way and uploaded to a website. It was a nice gallery.
